Pastoral Psychology

Originally published in , unlike most books dealing with psychology and pastoral work at the time, this work is not concerned solely with the application of psycho-therapeutic principles to the work of the minister. The author's foremost aim is to show that pastoral psychology should find its own techniques; even if it uses the experiences of psychotherapy, it is to be considered as an independent struktur of personality treatment.

His introductory chapter deals with the relationships between psychology and the care of souls and gives a historical survey. He then deals with the help that medical psychology can give pastoral psychology and gives an excellent chapter on methods of treatment. The problem of scepticism which Bergsten says can often be considered as a neurotic symptom, and the problem of real and apparent guilt are treated exhaustively and in a particularly fresh manner. Göte Bergsten

Göte Germanius Bergsten, född 28 maj, död 29 april[2], var en svensk metodistpastor.

Bergsten utbildades vid metodistkyrkans teologiska skola, var pastor bland annat i Göteborg och Stockholm, innan han blev direktor för Sankt Lukasstiftelsens institut för själavård och psykisk rådgivning i var tillsammans med bland andra Harald Giertz en av denna stiftelses initiativtagare. [3]Han var ledamot av sakkunnighetskommittén för den andliga vården vid sjukhusen Bergsten utgav flera arbeten där den samtida psykologin tillämpades på själavården, bland annat Bön och meditation () och Psykologien och själens vård (, 2:a upplagan ).

Bergsten ska ha varit den första icke-katoliken som i Sverige anordnat retreatverksamhet och i kristna sammanhang lärt ut meditation. Enligt Gunnel Vallquist var hans källor "de klassiska katolska[4].

    A History of the Genesis of the Movement

    During the past twenty years a remarkable renewal in pastoral care and enormous growth of pastoral counselling has taken place in several countries in Europe and North America. The vibrations from this development have crossed not only borders of denominations and professions, but also of states and nations. Dutch hospital chaplains have adapted American clinical pastoral education, British counsellors have learned from American pastoral counselling, Scandinavian parish ministers have accepted insights from German pastoral psychology, German pastors have become interested in the contribution of British psychology. Those few selected examples demonstrate already the international character of the present pastoral care and counselling movement (1).
