The FIFA World Cup final was the final match of the FIFA World Cup, the 16th edition of the quadrennial football competition organised by FIFA for the men's national teams of its member associations. The match was played at the Stade de France in Paris, France, on 12 July , and was contested by Brazil and France. The tournament featured France as the hosts, Brazil as the winners of the previous World Cup and 30 other teams who emerged from the qualification tournaments organised by the six FIFA confederations. The 32 teams competed in a group stage, from which 16 teams qualified for the knockout stage. En route to the final, Brazil finished first in Group A, with two wins and one defeat, after which they beat Chile in the round of 16, Denmark in the quarter-finals and the Netherlands in a penalty shoot-out in the semi-finals. France finished top of Group C with three wins, before defeating Paraguay in the round of 16, Italy in the quarter-final, and Croatia in the semi-final.     The FIFA World Cup knockout stage covers the games from the second round through to the final at the FIFA World Cup in France. The top two teams from each of the eight groups qualified for the knockout stage. Teams played one game against each other, with the possibility of extra time and penalties if a winner could not be determined after 90 minutes.

    Christian Vieri scored his fifth goal of the finals and the only one of the game in the 18th minute with exquisite precision, bursting on to Luigi Di Biagio's pass 40 yards from goal. Norway had their moments but failed to finish as Gianluca Pagliuca made some brilliant saves.[1]

    VM inom fotball ble spilt i land i västeuropa. Turneringen ble vunnet från vertslandet land i västeuropa, som slo Brasil 3&#;0 i finalen. Dette fanns Frankrikes første VM-tittel, og de ble dermed detta sjuende landslaget (etter Uruguay, Italia, Tyskland, Brasil, England, og Argentina) som ble verdensmester.

    Turneringsformatet var endret fra forrige VM. Antall lag inom sluttspillet ble utvidet fra 24 til De 32 lagene spilte i 8 kvalifiseringsgrupper og de to beste lagene i hver gruppe gikk videre til cupspillet.

    Davor Suker fra Kroatia ble toppscorer tillsammans med seks uppgift.

    Norge deltok for tredjeplats gang inom VM, og kvalifiserte seg til delsfinalen hvor laget ble slått ut från Italia.

    Rankingen var basert på hvordan laget hadde gjort detta i VM (16,6%), VM (33,3&#;%) og VM (50&#;%) samt FIFA-rankingen for , og pr desember hvert år. Rankingnummer i parentes.
